May 10, 2018… From the County’s “What’s Happening in the CCS” by Renarta Moyd: “Kudos to the students and staff at Seventy-First Classical Middle School (SFCMS) for being selected to participate in a training film on how to lead and globalize instruction through the Participate organization in North Carolina. A film crew from Dublin, Ireland visited the school for [four] days… to film teachers facilitating professional development on providing equal access to ensure inclusiveness to all students. The film crew also captured activities of the school’s Social Equity Club, Global Advisory Board, …the Model United Nations Club, [the Media Center, and several classrooms]. Several students and the art teacher were interviewed. The film will be used as professional development for teachers and administrators across the state as well as to help SFCMS earn its Global Badge certification through NCDPI and Participate’s Global Cohort in Cumberland County.

May 7, 2018… Our awesome Forensics team took SECOND PLACE in the state-wide competition this past Saturday! We could not be more proud of them. Well done, students and coaches!

May 7, 2018… Congratulations to the following students for participating in the Junior Easter Regional Orchestra on Saturday, May 5, 2018, in Jacksonville, NC. After a very full day of rehearsing, they presented an awesome concert! Congratulations to violinists Emily J., Sebastian K., Katerina R., Joselin S., and Rachael S.

May 3, 2018… Congratulations to eighth-grader Sean K. who competed at the statewide Math Contest at Fayetteville State University today. He placed FIRST PLACE in the Math 2 competition! Way to go, Sean!

April 22, 2018… Congratulations to our very own Mr. Christopher Leggette, named Cumberland County Schools School Bus Driver of the Month! Thank you for all you do for us, Mr. Leggette!

April 15, 2018… Congratulations to our 18 fabulous Forensics students who participated in the Regional Forensics competition on Saturday, April 14, 2018, at Mac Williams Middle School. They won the Eastern Regional Tournament and will be advancing to the State competition on Saturday, May 5,2018, at Jay M. Robinson Middle School in Charlotte, N.C.!

April 12, 2018… Congratulations to eighth-grader Sean K. who competed at the NC Math Contest in Jacksonville, N.C. today. Out of 157 students from the southeastern part of the state, he won FIRST PLACE for Math 2! He will compete in the state competition in May.

March 23, 2018… Congratulations to our MathCounts team for their stellar performance at the state competition. Our team ranked 29 out of 46 teams from across the state. Great work!

March 22, 2018… Congratulations to the SFCMS Envirothon team, “Arachnophobia,” for their first place performance at the Region 7 Competition at Jones Lake State Park in Bladen County. The students earned the highest scores in four of the five events. They will advance to the state competition scheduled for April 27 and 28, 2018, at Cedarock Park in Burlington, N.C. Our team consists of five members who compete in five areas related to the environment: Wildlife, Aquatics, Current Issues, Forestry, and Soil. The SFCMS students earned a score of 360. Having a score of 350 or higher advanced them to the state competition, and the Envirothon Committee for Region 7 will pay for all of the registration fees for this competition. The students also received a check for $200 to help with additional expenses. Well done, Knights!

March 19, 2018… Congratulations to the SFCMS Quiz Bowl team who competed on Saturday, March 17, 2018, in Greensboro at the state finals. SFCMS took First Runner Up at the end of the championship round. The team consists of Anil G., Sean K., Yimeng M., Matthew M., Joshua M., Emmy T., and Joaquin V. Many thanks to coaches Barbara Brady and Maria Wood for leading the team again this school year.

March 16, 2018… “Bravo” to the SFCMS Chorus for their performance at the district-level NCMEA Music Performance Adjudication competition on Friday, March 16, 2018. The group received TWO Superior ratings and scored 98% in sight reading. Well done!

March 10, 2018… Congratulations to SFCMS DECA for their performance at the statewide competition in Greensboro, NC on March 8 and 9, 2018. Twenty-one seventh and eighth grade students from our school were the only middle school students to participate in this competition against approximately 3,700 high school students from across the state. Three SFCMS students were Series Finalists and received medals in their categories as follows: Asia M. – Principles of Business Management, Claudette H. – Principles of Hospitality and Tourism, and Arianna H. – Principles of Marketing. All twenty-one SFCMS students received pins for scoring above 250 on their written principles tests, and the SFCMS DECA Chapter received a plaque in recognition of attaining the NC DECA Chapter of Distinction status.

March 8, 2018… Please congratulate all of our basketball players, pep squad, and coaches for their performance at today’s Annual Basketball Classical Challenge against Reid Ross Classical Middle School.  Everyone displayed good sportsmanship and represented our school well! The boys’ trophy came back home to SFCMS, where it belongs! Great job everyone and many, many thanks to everyone who made this event happen. Go, Knights!

March 5, 2018… Congratulations to the SFCMS Battle of the Books team for placing 5th in the district-wide competition today. This year’s competitive team included Katelyn B., Anil G., Arianna H., Sean K., Stella M., Matthew M., Nazifa R., Joselin S., Sydney S., and Rachel S.

March 5, 2018… Congratulations to the SFCMS Forensics team for sweeping 2nd place at the March 3, 2018, county-wide competition. Individual SFCMS competitors placed as follows: Katelyn B., 1st place in Storytelling out of 20 competitors; Naina M., 1st place, Arianna H., 4th place, Claudette H., 7th place, and Amira G., 12th place, in Original Oratory out of 26 competitors; Cheryl L., 1st place, and Taara M., 3rd place, in Extemporaneous Speaking out of 15 competitors; Rayn H., 5th place, Sumayah L., 13th place, and Paris J., 16th place, in Dramatic Interpretation out of 20 competitors; Alan M., 7th place, Leila M., 8th place, Natasha H., 18th place, and Nivana S., 28th place in Humorous Interpretation out of 37 competitors; and Fern E./Hai-Anh T., 8th place in Duo Interpretation out of 17 competitors. Well done!!

March 4, 2018… Congratulations to the following students who auditioned and were accepted into JERO (Junior Eastern Regional Orchestra): Emily J. – 1st violin, 12th chair; Sebastian K. – 1st violin, 19th chair; Katerina R. – 1st violin, 22nd chair; Joselin S. – 2nd violin, 1st chair; Rachael S. – 1st violin, 10th chair; and Anil G. – 4th chair cello.

February 26, 2018… Congratulations to the members of the SFCMS Science Olympiad team! The Varsity and Junior Varsity teams both won FIRST PLACE at the Division B Middle School Regional Competition on Saturday, Feburary 24, 2018, at Fayetteville Technical Community College. SFCMS students competed in 23 events, and 32 individual students placed and received medals. The team will compete at the State Tournament on April 20 and 21, 2018.

February 22, 2018… Many thanks to Mrs. Denise McAlister and Mrs. Sharon Peterson for their DECA leadership! Our DECA chapter was recently recognized as a “North Carolina DECA Chapter of Distinction,” an honor that few chapters receive.

February 20, 2018… Congratulations to Emmy T. for placing third at today’s county-wide Spelling Bee.

February 10, 2018… Congratulations to the SFCMS MathCounts team for coming in first place at the Regional MathCounts Competition! Individual rankings included Sean K. (1st Place) and Cheryl L. (3rd Place). Sean K. also placed first in the Countdown Round Competition.

February 5, 2018… Congratulations to our school-wide Civic Oration Contest winners: First Place – Taara M. (8th Grade); Second Place – Natalie J.(6th Grade); and Third Place – Naina M. (8th Grade).

February 5, 2018… Congratulations to the following students who placed at this past weekend’s Regional Art Showcase! They all will be advancing to the State Competition on February 17, 2018, at the Durham School of Arts. First Place in Drawing – Sristi P.; First Place Printmaking – Kayla C.; Fourth Place in Mixed Media – Adam M.; and First Place in Computer-Generated – Kaytlin K.

January 29, 2018… Please congratulate the following students who were recently accepted into the Middle School Youth Orchestra:  Donte’ A., Leah G., Sebastian K., Kameron L., Briangely R., Katerina R., Joselin S., Rachael S., Emmy T., and Gloria V.

January 25, 2018… Congratulations to our school-wide Geography Bee winners: First Place – Natalie J. (6th Grade); Second Place – Anil G. (8th Grade); and Third Place – Joshua M. (7th Grade).

January 24, 2018… Congratulations to Mrs. Victoria Gemelli who received a grant from Lumbee River Electric for her “Makey-Makey Me An Innovator” project.  She was one of twelve teachers to apply and receive funding.

December 6, 2017… Congratulations to our Forensics Team for their performance in yesterday’s competition. The team placed second in the competition, and each member of our team contributed to our win.
