The students earned the highest scores in four of the five events. They will advance to the state competition scheduled for April 27 and 28, 2018, at Cedarock Park in Burlington, N.C. Our team consists of five members who compete in five areas related to the environment: Wildlife, Aquatics, Current Issues, Forestry, and Soil. The SFCMS students earned a score of 360. Having a score of 350 or higher advanced them to the state competition, and the Envirothon Committee for Region 7 has paid for all of the registration fees for this competition. The students also received a check for $200 to help with additional expenses.

Well done, Knights, and good luck at States!

A group picture of the SFCMS DECA State Competition Field Trip on March 8-9, 2018, including 21 students and 2 club advisorsOn March 8 and 9, 2018, twenty-one seventh and eighth grade students from Seventy-First Classical Middle School (SFCMS) participated in the statewide DECA competition in Greensboro, North Carolina. They were the only middle school students to participate in this competition against approximately 3,700 high school students from across the state. DECA, or Distributive Education Clubs of America, aims to support and enrich the education experience of students who are interested in careers in the business, finance, hospitality, and marketing sales and service industries.

Three SFCMS students were Series Finalists and received medals in their categories as follows: Asia Murchison – Principles of Business Management, Claudette Hosenbackez – Principles of Hospitality and Tourism, and Arianna Herring – Principles of Marketing. All twenty-one SFCMS students received pins for scoring above 250 on their written principles tests, and the SFCMS DECA Chapter received a plaque in recognition of attaining the NC DECA Chapter of Distinction status.

Special recognition goes to Mrs. Denise McAlister and Mrs. Sharon Peterson for their DECA leadership and for establishing a chapter at the school! Under their guidance, SFCMS DECA is a “North Carolina DECA Chapter of Distinction,” an honor that few chapters receive. SFCMS is the only middle school in North Carolina with a DECA chapter.
